Austin's undoubted appeal is it's beautiful year-round climate, booming economy and vibrant culture. For these reasons, the live music capital of Texas has attracted countless residents from all walks of life. Among that population are household names from the worlds of Hollywood entertainment, music and sports.
Come to the city and chances are you'll rub shoulders with one of these prominent names and fixtures of the public stage. Come meet a few of Austin's most famous neighbors.
An oscar-winning actor and one of Hollywood's most bankable A-listers, Mathew McConaughey could also be the most prominent graduate of the University of Texas. McConaughey can often be spotted at U of T sports games and other local events. He's also an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels within the city, as well as his own "Just Keep Livin'" Foundation, dedicated to funding health and mindfulness programs at inner-city high schools.
McConaughey purchased an incredible property along the banks of Lake Austin back in 2012. The sprawling 10,000 square-foot mansion lies on a beautiful 9-acre lot with its 7 boast slips providing immediate access to the crisp waters of the lake.
Another top talent from the world of Hollywood film, Sandra Bullock mostly splits her time between LA and Austin. In fact Bullock owns a large collection of homes across the United States, including residences in Georgia and New Orleans. She is a huge proponent of the film industry in Austin, and promotes the city as a filming location. Much of the material from her film series Miss Congeniality was filmed in the city.
In addition to residential real estate, Bullock is also a business owners involved in several different downtown Austin establishments. Among the most notable is Walton's Fancy & Staple, a combination florist, bakery, coffee shop and deli in the heart of the city.
Controversy aside, Lance Armstrong is likely the most famous professional cyclist in the world. Aside from making a life in the city himself, Armstrong has also made Austin the home of his non-profit group, the Livestrong Foundation, and his unique bike shop. Mellow Johnny's is a combination bike shop, cafe and training center.
A long-time resident of Austin, Armstrong has owned several properties throughout the city. He recently put his 8,000 square-foot mansion on the market for a reported $8.25 million.
Willie Nelson's name always appears somewhere near the top of any list of Austin's most famous residents. The man is the city's unofficial mascot, with his face adorning several muraled walls and "Keep Austin Weird" memorabilia. Simple put, Willie Nelson and the city of Austin are synonymous.
Nelson splits his time between his residence is Maui and the large ranch he owns just outside of Austin in the community of Spicewood, less than 30 miles from the city center. Nelson hosts his infamous 4th of July picnic each summer on the property, always sure to invite several of his friends from the music industry to help entertain guests.
Another proponent of the film industry in Austin, Elijah Wood is something of a local Austin icon. He's known to randomly pop at a whole range of restaurants and other events throughout the city. He even DJs local events.
He currently lives in a beautifully re-modeled Victoria mansion in the popular Bouldin Creek neighborhood. He purchased the trendy home in 2012.
