In 1982, Rhoda Tomasco was a volunteer at the local pediatric cancer unit in Houston, Texas. After witnessing first hand the depression and loneliness among these children, she had a vision and wanted to help. Rhoda wanted to provide young cancer patients with the opportunities to promote self-esteem and personal accomplishment through participating in positive group activities. She also wanted these kids to simply have fun. Rhoda started Sunshine Kids as a way to give these young kids an escape from their every day lives.
As of today, thousands of young cancer patients, from east coast to west, have benefited from Rhoda's vision. In order to provide these activities free of charge to the children and their families, Sunshine Kids events are completely funded by personal contributions, corporations and foundations.
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices have sponsored Sunshine Kids for over 25 years. Brokers, Managers and Sales Agents have volunteered, supported, loved and chaperoned Sunshine Kids and help put smiles on kids with cancer everywhere.
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Texas Realty has also played a major role in contributing to the success of Sunshine Kids. Every summer since 1991, BHHS Texas Realty has sponsored and hosted the Teen Lake Escape. On this fun-filled trip each year, 25 to 30 teenagers with cancer are treated to a long weekend of lake activities including swimming, tubing, water-skiing, guided bass fishing, para-sailing, lunch at cool local restaurants, visits with national sports figures and an afternoon cruise on Lakeway Marinas 60 foot yacht, the MYII, and more. This year, the Travis County SWAT Team came to demonstrate some K-9 drills and the kids were allowed inside the SWAT van. The Sheriff, Sally Hernandez, was even in attendance.
I want to personally thank all of you who took the time to donate your time and/or money towards this event. I was a major hit and I hear the kids are still talking about it.
Thanks Traci Oehler, Sabine McCalla, Paulette Bostur, Nickie Vasques and Jose Silva for spending the afternoon at the lake with the kids and keeping this event thriving for years to come.
