Many folks around the country would scoff and laugh heartily about what we call winter here in Austin. So, we don’t receive boat-loads of snow like they do in the mid-west or New England, but it is still, for the lack of a better word, really…really cold out there.
Despite how uninviting the outdoors may seem, there’s plenty going on throughout the city of Austin and surrounding areas to coax away the wintertime blues.
For your enjoyment, we present you with a few things to do in Austin this winter.
Find a Heated Patio
Your first instinct when the outdoor temperatures drop is to seek refuge in the protected, climate-controlled enclave of the indoors. But, a few pioneering Austin restaurants and bars are coaxing patrons back onto the outdoor patios and terraces that often go unused until the spring and summer return.
Hotel Van Zandt for example has created a warm, friendly atmosphere on its terrace. Around the pool, customers can bask in the glow of a huge outdoor fireplace while sipping their favorite mixed cocktails and gazing out over the city of Austin’s iconic skyline.
Similarly, French eatery Justine’s encourages restaurant-goers to enjoy outdoor climes within it’s huge outdoor winter tent. You can pretend its summer while sampling the French cuisine under the stars.
Bundle Up & Gaze Upward
While we’re on the topic of the night-time sky, why not escape the overpowering lights of the city and view the night-time sky in its full glory. The spectacle of the starry night may be available to you year-round, but winter’s extended night-time hours give you that much more time to enjoy it.
To get a closer look, check out the Star Party, taking place at the Westcave Preserve February 3rd, located conveniently just outside Austin’s city limits. A local astronomer will be on hand to answer any questions that come to mind and high-quality telescopes will allow for intimate viewing of the sparkling wonders.
Keep Things Indoors
You know what, sometimes it’s just too cold outside. We get it.
Luckily, Austin has more than enough to offer in terms of protected, climate-controlled indoor entertainment. Go ahead and take a break from the ravages of Old Man Winter.
With three locations throughout Greater Austin, Pinballz Arcade brings the old arcade atmosphere of decades past back to life. Enjoy classic pinball, great food and a fantastic environment. It’s perfect for a party too – no matter your age.
Looking for something a little more active? The Austin Bouldering project and iFly have both successfully brought traditionally outdoor activities indoors. Bouldering is rock-climbing without the ropes. All you need is a pair of climbing shoes and a chalk bag, both of which can be rented on site.
Indoor skydiving may seem like something out of science fiction, but iFly in Austin has made it a reality. The facility’s high-powered wind tunnel allows participants to mimic the sensation of flying, without even approaching an airplane.
We hope we’ve given you some inspiration to ward off the cold-weather blues. The weather may be frightful, but the city of Austin allows plenty of options to get you out of the house.
